Broadcast

Representative Audio Examples of Popular

FM Processors:

All following recordings were done directly from the MPX output of each processor using reference quality audio cards -- except for Breakaway Broadcast which was recorded using cheap on-board Realtek HD audio on $30 motherboards. All processors were set to 75us pre-emphasis, installed and calibrated in the best possible manner, adjusted to the same peak deviation, and the resulting MPX was decoded to left/right stereo using a reference quality stereo decoder, and encoded to MP3.

The recordings are highly representative of how a station using each processor would sound when received with a good quality tuner at good reception conditions. The presets used are representative factory presets. The music used was chosen for being an audio processor designer's worst nightmare.

Two Breakaway Broadcast recordings were made. One with the Plutonium preset (being a competitive but very high quality preset), and one with the Amsterdam preset (to show how BBP performs when pushed over the top).

  • "My Immortal" by Evanescence, for the sharp, powerful, bright voice on top of strings and piano -- wreaks havoc on most pre-emphasis clippers.
  • "Fading like a flower" by Roxette, for liberal use of piano and sudden powerful dynamic impacts which tend to catch front-ends by surprise.
  • "Electrical Storm" by U2, for use of Xylophone -- quite possibly the most difficult instrument of all for a pre-emphasis clipper.

Footnote:
We are painfully aware that less scrupulous companies would blatantly cheat in a competitive comparison such as the one above. For example, a particular consumer audio enhancement company mixed the "before" audio to mono to demonstrate the effectiveness of their stereo ambience enhancer. ClaessonEdwards does not engage in or condone such practices. We're fully aware that you will do your own test before making any decision, and we welcome it. ClaessonEdwards is an engineering-driven company, and we find it more effective to actually develop better products than to rig competitive comparisons, as well as being better for long term reputation than claiming things that can so easily be disproven.
